A gang of armed robbers struck a Mukuru Money Transfer agency located at Makomva Shopping Centre in Glen View, Harare, yesterday morning, escaping with over US$2,700 and R2,350. The daring heist occurred around 10 a.m. and sent panic through the busy shopping area.
Eyewitnesses said the four-man gang, armed with pistols, arrived in a black Toyota Mark X, which they parked directly in front of the agency housed inside a pharmacy. Without warning, the robbers brandished their firearms, stormed the agency, and held workers hostage as they looted the cash.
"They fired shots into the air as they fled the scene, causing panic among shoppers and nearby vendors," said a witness, describing the chaos that ensued.
Police sources believe the robbers had conducted prior surveillance and waited for a security company to deliver cash to the Mukuru agency. When the cash delivery was made, the gang sprung into action, attacking a teller and a customer who had just withdrawn approximately US$950.
During the attack, the robbers stole US$1,839 from the teller and an additional R2,350 before fleeing the scene. Eyewitnesses reported that the gang fired warning shots as they sped away, further heightening the tension in the area.
A team of detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Homicide and other law enforcement units was promptly dispatched to the scene to commence investigations.
National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incident and provided initial details of the robbery.
"We can confirm that US$2,789 and R2,350 was robbed by four suspects who were armed and using a getaway car," said Commissioner Nyathi.
He added that investigations are ongoing, particularly to establish whether the black Toyota Mark X used in the heist had a registration number.
"Police are currently attending to the scene and conducting investigations," he said, appealing to the public for any information that might assist in tracking down the suspects.
In an unrelated case, Harare police are investigating a break-in and theft that occurred on December 13, 2024, at a residence on Abyone Drive, Newlands. An unknown suspect reportedly broke into the house and stole a cash box containing US$20,000 along with a laptop.
Meanwhile, in Marondera, police are also investigating a separate unlawful entry and theft incident that occurred at Rakodzi Estate on December 12, 2024. During the incident, unknown suspects broke through the main entrance door and made off with firearms, including a Farbam shotgun, a Brno shotgun, and a BSA rifle, while the owner was away in Harare.
Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help curb the recent surge in armed robberies and theft cases.
