The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has emphasized that its ongoing traffic enforcement operation is aimed at curbing road lawlessness and ensuring the safety of all road users.

The operation, code-named "No to Mushikashika, Pirate Taxis and Lawlessness on the Roads," has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with some members of the public questioning its implementation.

In a statement, the ZRP outlined that the operation targets motorists who violate traffic regulations, including those causing congestion, picking up or dropping off passengers at undesignated points, creating illegal lanes, and driving against the flow of traffic.

Additionally, the police are cracking down on unregistered Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) operating without valid permits, route authority, or vehicle fitness certification.

"The operation is targeting anyone who poses a danger to innocent motorists and disobeys traffic rules and regulations," the ZRP said.

The initiative has seen an increased police presence in urban areas, particularly in high-traffic zones where illegal transport operators, commonly known as mushikashika, are prevalent.

The police urged members of the public and motorists to cooperate with law enforcement authorities as they work to restore order on the country's roads.

While the operation has been commended by some for addressing traffic chaos, others have raised concerns over its impact on commuters who rely on informal transport operators. The ZRP, however, reiterated that its primary goal is to enhance road safety and reduce accidents caused by reckless driving and non-compliance with traffic laws.
