The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) yesterday arrested two police officers stationed at the Lion's Den tollgate along the Harare-Chirundu highway for allegedly taking a $1 bribe from a motorist.
The accused officers, Paul Muchenje from ZRP Chemagamba in Chinhoyi and Shamiso Nyabasa of ZRP Chinhoyi Central, are expected to appear in court today.
The case was reported by motorist Blessing Mazinyama, who alerted ZACC to the officers' alleged corrupt activities. Mazinyama stated that police officers deployed at the tollgate had been demanding bribes ranging from $1 to $5 from motorists attempting to evade paying toll fees. Those who resisted were reportedly threatened with vehicle impoundment and a penalty fee of $100.
On Wednesday, Mazinyama filed a detailed report with ZACC, outlining the alleged misconduct. Acting on this information, ZACC investigators set up a trap using a marked $1 note (serial number D101548630).
During the operation, Mazinyama, accompanied by ZACC officials, drove through the tollgate. The officers on duty flagged him down, and upon disembarking, Mazinyama handed over the marked dollar to Muchenje, who placed it in his pocket.
Moments later, ZACC investigators emerged from the vehicle, identified themselves, and apprehended the two officers.
The two accused officers now face corruption charges, with the State serving as the complainant. The arrests underscore ZACC's commitment to rooting out corruption at all levels, even for seemingly minor infractions.
The incident highlights ongoing efforts to uphold accountability within public institutions, particularly law enforcement, which has often faced allegations of corrupt practices.
