'Private sector key to Zimbabwe's energy transformation'

Zimbabwe is positioning the private sector as a central player in its quest for a sustainable, reliable, and inclusive energy future, government officials have emphasized.
At the ongoing National Energy Compact workshop in Harare, Dr Gloria Magombo, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, highlighted the critical role of private investment alongside government reforms.
"As the Government undertakes bold reforms to modernise infrastructure and expand access to clean energy, private investment is essential to translating policy into tangible progress," Dr Magombo said.
She noted that government initiatives are focused on creating an enabling environment to attract much-needed capital while simultaneously addressing challenges related to energy access, reliability, and sustainability.
Key efforts include the modernisation of Zimbabwe's transmission and distribution networks, increased commitment to renewable energy projects, and the rollout of a new energy policy aimed at more than doubling current energy efficiency levels.
"We recognise the importance of the private sector as a partner in the implementation of all these initiatives," Dr Magombo added, underscoring the collaborative approach between government and private entities.
The National Energy Compact, a framework being developed through the workshop, represents Zimbabwe's pledge to achieve universal access to clean and modern energy services by 2030 - a goal reliant on strong private sector participation.
With the right partnerships and a favourable investment climate, Zimbabwe is laying the foundation for a more resilient energy sector that will not only power economic growth but also ensure long-term sustainability for its people.
