What started as a typical night out quickly turned into a harrowing ordeal at a local sports bar in Luveve on the evening of May 14, when armed robbers terrorised patrons and staff.

Around 10 PM, two men entered the bar, blending in as casual customers by buying a quart of Castle beer and quietly sipping their drinks. But the calm was shattered when one suddenly pulled a pistol and aimed it at the bartender.

"They looked like normal customers," said the shaken 35-year-old bartender from Nkulumane 12. "Then suddenly, one pulled a gun and pointed it straight at me."

Police reports indicate a third suspect was stationed outside, keeping watch near a suspicious white Honda Fit parked about 30 metres away. A warning gunshot fired into the air was the signal for the robbery to begin.

"One of the men pulled out a pistol and fired a shot in the air," confirmed Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele. "The security guard immediately hit the ground, terrified."

The robbers demanded cash and valuables, making off with US$180, R600 in local currency, and a Samsung A13 cellphone  -  loot valued at roughly US$340.

They fled in the white Honda Fit, disappearing into the night before police could respond. No arrests have been made and none of the stolen property has been recovered.

Inspector Msebele urged bar operators to remain vigilant and advised timely closing hours. "These criminals are ruthless and well-organised," she warned.

Police are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators behind the Luveve bar heist.

From a gunshot warning to a swift escape, Bulawayo's nightlife now faces a dangerous new threat.
