United Refineries Limited CEO and prominent Zimbabwean business leader Busisa Moyo has accepted a luxury vehicle valued at US$200,000 from businessman Wicknell Chivayo as a token of appreciation for his role in the successful hosting of the 65th edition of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF).

The brand-new 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser was handed over to Moyo at Faramatsi Motors in Harare. The gesture followed what has been hailed as a landmark "Blue Sapphire" edition of the ZITF held in Bulawayo last month, which attracted more than 800 exhibitors from over 30 countries.

Moyo, a seasoned executive who also chairs several key national bodies - including ZITF itself, the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (ZIDA), and the Oil Expressers Association of Zimbabwe - expressed heartfelt gratitude to Chivayo, government officials, and President Emmerson Mnangagwa for their support. He notably thanked Mnangagwa and Industry and Commerce Minister Mangaliso Nqobizitha Ndlovu for "allowing" him to accept the vehicle.

In a rare moment of public reflection, Moyo used the occasion not only to accept the gift but to highlight the importance of giving back to disadvantaged communities. "I'm really challenged by what Mr Chivayo has done. He has done for us what he is passionate about, and he's challenging us to do for others what we are passionate about," Moyo said.

He pledged to channel his gratitude into social action, particularly in the education sector. "I'm going to look at classrooms in rural areas with a few of my friends to join me, so that we bring value to the community," he announced.

The move has sparked both admiration and debate, with some praising Moyo's philanthropic pivot while others questioned the optics of wealthy executives receiving luxury gifts in a country grappling with economic challenges.

Moyo, who once served as president of the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries and sat on the now-defunct Presidential Advisory Council advising Mnangagwa, is considered one of Zimbabwe's most influential business leaders. With a portfolio of high-level board appointments, he is widely regarded as capable of affording such a vehicle himself.

At a similar ceremony last week, ZITF chief executive Dr Nicholas Ndebele also received a Toyota Land Cruiser from Chivayo. He expressed appreciation for the recognition, calling it "an endorsement of the work" that went into organizing the continent's premier multi-sectoral trade event.

The high-profile handovers underscore Chivayo's ongoing campaign to reward public figures he believes are contributing to Zimbabwe's development. While his actions continue to make headlines, they also raise broader conversations about public accountability, transparency, and the role of philanthropy in national progress.
