Tabani Moyo, Regional Secretariat Director for the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA), has been appointed as a member of the African Union (AU) Working Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The announcement highlights Moyo's growing influence in the intersection of media, technology, and policy across the continent.
Moyo, who is also a respected columnist for The Standard, described the appointment as a recognition of the impactful work carried out by MISA's Regional Office, its chapters, and networks in various capacities. In his acceptance speech, he expressed humility and commitment to serving the peoples of Africa and its diaspora.
"We accept the responsibility thrust upon our shoulders with humility and honour in service of the peoples of Africa… and the diaspora," Moyo said. He further acknowledged the strong collaborative relationship between MISA and Zimbabwe's Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, noting how this partnership has helped spotlight their expertise in the field.
Moyo also extended gratitude to key regional and international stakeholders including the African Union Commission, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and UNESCO's Regional Office for Southern Africa. He emphasized the importance of considering societal, scientific, educational, cultural, legal, and regulatory factors in the development and implementation of AI systems.
The AU Commission first established the Working Group on AI in 2019, comprising representatives from AU member states and Pan-African organisations. This initiative was part of a broader push to harness the transformative potential of AI across Africa, while managing its risks.
In April 2024, the 44th Ordinary Session of the African Union Executive Council endorsed a comprehensive, forward-looking Continental AI Strategy, tasking the AU Commission with its development. The strategy, adopted in July 2024, aligns with the AU's Agenda 2063, aiming to use AI to drive sustainable development and continental transformation.
Moyo's appointment to the Working Group follows his significant contribution in July 2023 as one of 21 global experts on a committee established by Reporters Without Borders. The committee, composed of academics and professionals from 13 countries specializing in journalism, AI, and digital technologies, was led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa. Their work culminated in the launch of the Media and AI Charter in November 2023, setting global standards for ethical media practices in the AI era.
Moyo's new role places him at the forefront of shaping AI policy and governance in Africa, where technology's promise is balanced by the need for responsible oversight and inclusivity.
