President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to commission Geo Pomona Waste Management's cutting-edge sorting plant and refuse collection equipment today, marking a landmark moment in Zimbabwe's waste management efforts. The launch of door-to-door waste collection services will follow tomorrow, Friday, June 6.

The new sorting facility is designed to carry out a thorough separation of incoming waste, in line with international best practices. It efficiently sorts bulky materials and recyclable items from general waste, ensuring that recyclables are diverted from incineration and harmful environmental practices are avoided. This aligns Zimbabwe's waste management system with global environmental standards.

The plant also prepares waste with high calorific value for Geo Pomona's upcoming waste-to-energy plant, which will incinerate 1,000 tonnes of waste to generate between 16MW and 22MW of electricity per hour, to be fed into the national grid.

Geo Pomona's Executive Chairman and CEO, Dr. Dilesh Nguwaya, told Zimpapers that the commissioning represents a significant step for both the company and the country's environmental progress.

"His Excellency, the President, will be commissioning the waste sorting plant and refuse collection equipment today. The sorting facility is now fully complete, with all equipment installed and operational. This milestone underscores our commitment to the waste management hierarchy and a ‘Zero-Waste to Landfill' policy," said Dr. Nguwaya.

He confirmed that the refuse collection fleet would be officially launched tomorrow, bringing door-to-door waste collection services directly to Harare residents.

"Perhaps the most anticipated milestone is the commissioning of the refuse collection fleet, which enables us to begin door-to-door waste collection from June 6. Residents across Harare will see Geo Pomona trucks collecting waste right at their doorsteps," he added.

Dr. Nguwaya emphasised the company's immediate mission to clean up Harare and restore its "Sunshine City" reputation.

"We are committed to this goal and will not let residents down. With the sorting plant operational, we will promote recycling, increase public awareness, and foster a shift towards sustainable waste management. The plant is central to this transformation, improving waste handling efficiency and supporting the circular economy," he said.

The sorting plant was assembled with technical assistance from Turkish engineers, facilitating valuable skills transfer to local technicians - a development aligned with the government's focus on empowerment and capacity building.

"Our local engineering team worked closely with Turkish experts during installation, which enabled direct skills transfer. This collaboration enhanced our engineers' ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot the plant independently. The team on site now fully operates the facility," Dr. Nguwaya explained.

The commissioning of this advanced waste sorting facility and the launch of door-to-door collection services are expected to significantly boost Zimbabwe's waste management standards, improve public health, and support sustainable development goals.
