Japan has contributed a total of US$7 million towards demining activities in Zimbabwe since 2013, reinforcing its long-standing partnership with the country, Japanese Ambassador Shinichi Yamanaka revealed during a meeting with Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri today.
Speaking after a courtesy call at the Ministry of Defence offices, Ambassador Yamanaka said discussions focused primarily on landmine clearance operations, particularly in border areas with Mozambique.
"Japan has been contributing since 2013 for this landmine clearance, mainly in border areas with Mozambique. So far, we have provided US$7 million. We greatly appreciate the strong initiative of the Government of Zimbabwe, and it will be a good lesson for other mine-affected countries," he said.
Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri expressed gratitude to Japan for its unwavering support, noting the enduring friendship between the two nations dating back to Zimbabwe's independence in 1980.
"We continue thanking the Government of Japan for remaining a reliable friend, who has not reneged on our relationship since 1980," she said. "That is why they came today—to renew that relationship in this particular area to bring peace and stability to our country, not leaving anyone behind."
The ongoing demining efforts contribute significantly to enhancing safety and stability in affected regions, enabling communities to rebuild and develop without the looming threat of landmines.
Japan's sustained assistance underscores its commitment to supporting Zimbabwe's peacebuilding and development initiatives while fostering stronger bilateral ties.
