3 hrs ago | Views

What was initially reported as a major armed robbery in Mt Darwin, in which US$700,000 and 2.4 kilogrammes of gold were allegedly stolen, is now being treated as an attempted robbery, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed.
In an update posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on 26 June 2025, the ZRP had stated that three unidentified armed suspects had stormed a commercial bank in the early hours of the morning, overpowered a security guard, and made off with the cash and gold.
However, in a new development, police authorities have clarified that all the money and gold have been recovered, prompting a reclassification of the case.
"Following further investigations, the case is now being treated as an attempted robbery, as all the cash and gold have since been recovered," the ZRP said in a statement.
The circumstances surrounding the recovery of the valuables have not yet been disclosed, but the police say more details will be released in due course as investigations continue.
The initial report had caused public alarm due to the scale of the heist and the high-value assets involved. The reversal has now raised new questions about how the incident unfolded and the swift recovery of the stolen property.
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain calm and report any useful information as investigations progress.
