Zimbabwe cracks down on counterfeit products

Zimbabwean authorities have launched a major crackdown on counterfeit goods amid growing concerns about consumer safety and the influx of fake products in local markets.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police, working with the Consumer Protection Commission, has raided shops and warehouses across Harare, Bulawayo, and other urban centres. Fake foodstuffs, cosmetics, medicines, and electrical appliances have been confiscated.

Officials say the counterfeit trade poses serious health risks and undermines genuine businesses. "Some of these products are toxic, expired, or manufactured without meeting any standards. We will not allow citizens to be exposed to such dangers," said Consumer Protection Commission spokesperson Mrs. Rosemary Nkomo.

Analysts say the rise in counterfeit products is being driven by porous borders and weak enforcement of import controls. With formal goods often priced in US dollars, many consumers are turning to cheaper alternatives, creating a lucrative market for fake items.

Business leaders have welcomed the crackdown but urged authorities to sustain it. "We have seen raids before, but what we need is a long-term strategy to protect both consumers and legitimate businesses," said Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers president Denford Mutashu.
