President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa will this Tuesday afternoon officially launch Zimbabwe's campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the period 2027–2028 at the Harare International Conference Centre.

Zimbabwe's candidature has already secured backing from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and several strategic international partners, including Russia, Cuba, Iran, and Senegal.

If successful, the move would mark a historic milestone for Zimbabwe and the continent as Africa continues to push for stronger representation on global security and governance matters.

The Security Council is made up of five permanent members — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States — and 10 non-permanent members elected on a rotational basis to serve two-year terms.

Decisions require at least nine of the 15 votes, though any of the five permanent members can exercise veto power, giving them decisive influence on outcomes.

Zimbabwe's campaign is expected to emphasise Africa's collective push for fairer representation in the council and Harare's stated commitment to peace, regional security, and multilateralism.

Observers note that a successful bid would place Zimbabwe at the heart of global decision-making on conflict resolution, sanctions, humanitarian crises, and peacekeeping operations. It would also mark the first time Zimbabwe has sat on the council since joining the UN in 1980.
