Two Vietnamese nationals have appeared before Harare magistrate Lynne Chizhou facing charges of human trafficking and violating immigration laws after allegedly luring their compatriot to Zimbabwe under false pretences.

Hau Phan (28) and Thi Doung (26) were remanded in custody pending a bail application.

Prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti told the court that in August this year, the pair recruited a fellow Vietnamese national to work as a massage therapist in Zimbabwe, promising her a lucrative salary. They allegedly covered all travel expenses for the victim, who arrived via Victoria Falls International Airport on August 14.

However, upon arrival, the accused are said to have confiscated the victim's passport, restricting her movements. The State alleged that they then forced her to provide massage services at various locations without payment, claiming they were deducting her earnings to recover travel expenses.

The victim was allegedly compelled to work even while unwell. On September 16, when she failed to attend to a client due to illness, the duo reportedly assaulted her, leaving her with facial bruises. She later reported the matter to the police, leading to their arrest.

The court also heard that Phan and Doung entered Zimbabwe through Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport on holiday visas valid until September 13. They overstayed by six days without seeking an extension or leaving the country.

The case continues.
