A 13-year-old Grade Seven pupil, Caroline Chari, was mauled to death by three dogs at St Mannocks Farm in Nyabira on 29 September, just days before she was due to sit for her final primary school examinations.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the tragedy in a statement, saying Caroline was walking home from school with four classmates when the attack occurred.
"The victim was coming from school in the company of four schoolmates when three marauding dogs attacked and chased them. The children ran in different directions, and the dogs caught up with the victim, resulting in her death," police said.
The owner of the dogs, 50-year-old Gift Jambera, has since been arrested. Investigations revealed that the animals had last been vaccinated in 2024, and the owner had ignored the Department of Veterinary Services' 2025 rabies vaccination outreach programme.
The incident has sparked renewed concern over dog control and public safety. In response to a rise in fatal dog attacks, the ZRP recently launched a joint operation with the SPCA and local authorities targeting stray dogs and irresponsible owners who allow their pets to roam freely.
Police also reminded the public of the Harare Dog Licensing and Control By-Law of 1993, which requires all dogs to be leashed and properly controlled in public spaces.
"The ZRP reminds dog owners to keep their dogs on leash and ensure that dogs do not roam on the streets unsupervised in accordance with the country's laws. Dog owners should prioritize the safety of others," read part of a police statement issued on 19 September.
Caroline's death has left the Nyabira community in mourning, with residents calling for stricter enforcement of animal control laws to prevent further tragedies.
