Three municipal police officers from Bulawayo City Council (BCC) were attacked on Wednesday while conducting a cleanup operation along 5th Avenue in the Central Business District, leaving one officer seriously injured.

The incident was disclosed by Bulawayo mayor, Councillor David Coltart, during a ceremony at Large City Hall where Altcom donated 50 refuse bins to the council.

"One of our municipal police officers was severely injured trying to implement the rule of law and clean up our city, and that is unacceptable. If we want to take our city forward - make it clean, healthy, attractive for investment, and provide formal employment to those currently in informal employment - we have to restore order," Mayor Coltart said.

He called on law enforcement agencies to identify the culprits and ensure they are brought to justice. The mayor also appealed to the public to support the council's efforts in achieving smart city status by avoiding illegal dumping, particularly by construction companies.

"Can you imagine, as we seek to promote tourism in this city and attract visitors who love our culture and traditions, illegal dumping continues? It needs to end," he stressed.

Mayor Coltart shared lessons from his recent visit to Osaka, Japan, noting the high level of civic discipline there. "Osaka is a city of 18 million people - more than the entire population of Zimbabwe. During my five-day stay, I did not see a single bin or a piece of litter on the ground. That is because the people are self-disciplined," he said.

The mayor expressed gratitude for Altcom's donation of 50 refuse bins, adding to a previous donation of 60 bins worth US$6,900 from Masters Paint and Hardware last week.
