Controversial businessman Wicknell Chivhayo has attempted to distance himself from longstanding corruption allegations surrounding the failed Gwanda Solar Project.
The effort to clear his name was revealed by government-aligned X (formerly Twitter) user C.H. Mukungunugwa, who claimed that Chivhayo had "set the record straight" on the matter.
"Sir Wicknell Chivhayo has issued a strong response to ongoing criticism surrounding the Gwanda Solar Project, asserting that the matter has already been resolved by Zimbabwe's highest courts. In his statement, he accuses his critic of pursuing a personal vendetta rather than genuine public accountability," Mukungunugwa posted.
Chivhayo reportedly clarified that Intratrek Zimbabwe, the company he leads, legally won the Gwanda Solar tender as the lowest compliant bidder, in partnership with CHiNT Electric Co. Ltd - one of the world's largest solar energy firms. He emphasized that Zimbabwean law does not require companies to have existed for decades before bidding, only that they be properly registered and demonstrate capacity.
Mukungunugwa added that Chivhayo dismissed claims that Intratrek acted as a "middleman," stating the company independently secured land, regulatory approvals, and national project status - all key elements of project development.
Addressing the contentious US$5 million advance payment, Chivhayo pointed out that the Supreme Court ruled the payment was fully accounted for and confirmed the contract as valid and enforceable. He said the project would proceed once financial closure is achieved.
Chivhayo concluded by defending his business practices as compliant with procurement laws, insisting that his success in winning tenders stems from merit and legal compliance - not corruption.
