The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested a suspect in Harare following the recovery of a large consignment of smuggled alcoholic beverages, in what authorities describe as a significant breakthrough in the fight against illicit trade and substance abuse.

Police confirmed that 2,760 bottles of illegally imported alcohol were recovered during the operation, with investigations now underway to establish the source of the contraband and identify those involved in its distribution.

ZRP national spokesperson Paul Nyathi said the arrest was linked to the unlawful possession and smuggling of alcoholic beverages believed to have been brought into the country from a neighbouring state.

"The ZRP confirms the arrest of a suspect in Harare in connection with the unlawful possession and smuggling of illicit alcoholic beverages from a neighbouring country," Commissioner Nyathi said.

"Subsequently, the police recovered 2,760 300ml bottles of smuggled alcoholic beverages."

Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the suspect or the specific type of alcohol recovered.

Police said investigations are continuing to determine how the products entered the country and whether a broader smuggling network was involved.

The seizure comes as law enforcement agencies intensify efforts to curb the smuggling of goods across Zimbabwe's borders, a practice authorities say deprives the State of revenue and undermines legitimate businesses.

Officials have also linked the circulation of illicit alcoholic products to public health and safety concerns, particularly where products enter the market without proper regulatory oversight.

The ZRP said further details would be released as investigations progress and additional arrests may be made if evidence points to a wider distribution syndicate.

The latest operation forms part of ongoing national efforts to combat smuggling, illegal trade and the distribution of unregulated products in Zimbabwe.
