An attempted robbery at the Chinese-owned China Zhuhe Mining gold mine in Mutoko was foiled in the early hours of October 9, 2025, authorities confirmed.
According to a statement released by the company, the incident occurred at 00:33, when several armed gangsters climbed over the mine's courtyard wall with the intent to commit a robbery. An on-duty Chinese engineer, legally licensed to carry a firearm for security purposes, fired warning shots into the air, causing the attackers to flee immediately.
Later that morning, at around 7:00 a.m., local early-shift workers discovered a severely injured man approximately one kilometre from the crime scene. The injured individual, believed to be one of the fleeing gangsters, was reported to Mr. Zilu, the mine's local translator and direct supervisor. By the time authorities arrived, the gangster had succumbed to his injuries.
The incident sparked temporary confusion among local villagers who, unaware of the full circumstances, believed that Chinese mine employees had been involved in misconduct. A group of villagers reportedly confronted several Chinese workers, but police intervened promptly to restore order and prevent escalation.
The local police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident. One accomplice of the deceased gangster has come forward, confessing to participation in the attempted robbery. Investigations into other suspects involved are ongoing.
The Chinese engineer involved in the incident is cooperating fully with authorities and awaits the final decision by the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
The mining company emphasized that the engineer's actions were legal and in line with safety protocols designed to protect staff and property from criminal acts.
The police have urged residents to avoid speculation until the investigation is concluded, highlighting the importance of community cooperation in maintaining safety around industrial operations.
