A Bulawayo woman, Xoli Mkhize, has died at Mpilo Central Hospital from severe injuries sustained during a violent mob attack, in what friends allege was a hate-driven assault targeting her sexual orientation.
Hospital officials confirmed that Mkhize was brought in by police following the attack.
"She arrived with extensive injuries consistent with severe physical assault, and there were indications she may have been sexually abused before admission," said a hospital source. "Despite our best efforts, her condition was critical, and she did not survive."
Friends and associates have expressed heartbreak and outrage, describing Mkhize as "a kind, open-hearted woman" who was targeted because of her identity as a lesbian.
"This reflects the dangerous levels of intolerance and hatred that still persist in our community," one close friend said.
Concerns are also mounting over the whereabouts of Mkhize's partner, Rashel Sibanda, who reportedly went missing days before the attack.
"We don't know if Rashel's disappearance is connected to what happened to Xoli. Her phone has been off, and no one has seen her," another associate said.
Community groups and human rights advocates have condemned the incident, calling for a thorough investigation and stronger protection for marginalised communities.
As of press time, police had not yet issued an official statement regarding the attack or any arrests.
