Sixteen Zimbabwean students are set to leave for Russia this week to pursue fully funded Master's degrees in Agricultural Engineering, in a programme the government has hailed as vital to Zimbabwe's quest for a knowledge-driven and industrialised economy.

The group will undertake their studies at Don State Technical University, one of Russia's leading institutions in engineering and applied sciences. The initiative underscores the strengthening educational partnership between Zimbabwe and the Russian Federation.

Speaking during a send-off ceremony held in Harare on Monday, the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Ambassador Frederick Shava, reaffirmed government's commitment to building human capital for national development.

"Human capital development remains central to our industrialisation and modernisation agenda. These students represent the future of Zimbabwe's innovation and agricultural transformation," said Shava.

Over the past three years, 60 students have benefited from the scholarship programme, which is coordinated by the Centre for Education Innovation Research and Development.

The scholarship is part of ongoing efforts to enhance scientific and technological cooperation between Zimbabwe and Russia, focusing on advancing agricultural mechanisation, research, and innovation.

Upon completion of their studies, the students are expected to return home as engineers and researchers to contribute towards modernising Zimbabwe's agriculture sector and promoting national food security.
