INSUZA – Police in Matabeleland have arrested a 45-year-old man who was captured in a viral video brutally assaulting a woman with a sjambok, sparking public outrage across social media platforms.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrest of Mehluli Ncube on November 5 in connection with the incident, which occurred on October 24 at Village 2C in Insuza.
“Investigations by the police have established that the suspect allegedly attacked the victim together with her husband after accusing them of theft,” read the statement. “He tied the husband’s hands with tyre cables, covered his head with plastic, and went on to callously assault the couple.”
The video, which circulated widely online, prompted calls for swift justice and raised concerns about gender-based violence and vigilante behavior in rural communities.
Police say Ncube is expected to face charges related to assault and unlawful detention. The investigation is ongoing.
