Mobile money service provider EcoCash has issued a stern warning to customers amid a surge in scams involving fake promotions, bargain deals, and fraudulent online loan offers.
In a statement, the company said fraudsters are luring unsuspecting users with deals that seem "too-good-to-be-true," often requiring payment via EcoCash before tricking individuals into revealing sensitive account information.
"EcoCash is aware of scammers targeting customers through fake promotions, cheap deals, quick loans, and other online offers that require payment using EcoCash," the statement read. "In most cases, these scammers deceive customers into sharing their EcoCash PIN or One-Time Password (OTP). Once this information is disclosed, fraudsters gain unauthorised access to the customer's EcoCash wallet and steal their funds."
The company emphasised that EcoCash employees will never request a PIN or OTP and urged customers to exercise caution when engaging with promotions or loan schemes circulated via social media, SMS, or other digital channels.
Users were also warned not to click on suspicious links or transfer funds to other accounts under the guise of "safekeeping," as such requests are a common tactic used by fraudsters.
"Staying alert is the best way to protect your money," EcoCash said, reiterating the need for vigilance in the digital financial space.
