The Zimbabwean government has deployed officers nationwide, including at ports of entry, to track and remove recalled Nestle baby formula products from store shelves following a global safety alert.

Health authorities acted promptly after concerns emerged that certain batches of Nestle's NAN Special Pro HA 0-12 800g infant formula may contain a toxin capable of causing food poisoning. In a memorandum addressed to provincial medical directors and city health directors, Health and Child Care secretary Aspect Maunganidze confirmed that the affected product had been distributed in several European countries, including France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Italy, and Sweden.

"The implicated product relates to one batch of Specialty Infant Formula, currently manufactured in Germany, which has been distributed to several regions," Maunganidze said, specifying the affected batch as NAN Special Pro Batch Number: 51660748F3, with a best-before date of 15 December 2026 and manufactured on 15 June 2025. The formula has an 18-month shelf life.

Health authorities have instructed officers to actively monitor shelves and ports of entry, remove any affected batches, and record quantities and descriptions before returning them to the manufacturer.

Nestle issued the recall as a precautionary measure after identifying that the batches could potentially contain cereulide, a toxin that can trigger nausea and vomiting. The company emphasised that no illnesses had been confirmed but reiterated that the safety of babies remains its highest priority. "There have been no confirmed reports of illness associated with the products, but we have been recalling them out of an abundance of caution," Nestle said.

The company also confirmed that unaffected batches and other products remain safe for consumption.

The swift action by Zimbabwean authorities underscores the country's proactive approach to protecting infant health. By quickly removing potentially contaminated formula from circulation, the government aims to safeguard vulnerable babies while tracing and securing affected products.
