Zanu-PF First Secretary and President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, will tomorrow lead the party in marking National Cell Day, a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening the party's grassroots structures, unity, and visibility. The event will take place at Precabe Farm in Kwekwe, where the President and members of the First Family are expected to join their respective party cell.
In a demonstration of the party's disciplined internal democracy, President Mnangagwa will participate as an ordinary cell member, listening to the cell chairperson and offering guidance during the proceedings. While the President is scheduled to deliver a brief message, the main address will be presented by the cell chairperson, consistent with the practice for all Zanu-PF cell meetings.
Speaking ahead of the event, Zanu-PF national political commissar, Munyaradzi Machacha, emphasised that attendance is mandatory for all party members, including Presidium, Politburo, and Central Committee members. The exercise, running from 11am to 1.30pm, will also serve as a membership verification and recruitment drive.
"Every member of the party, from the highest office down, is required to attend this event. We will assess our strength and verify whether our members are registered to vote, making this a very important occasion for the party," Machacha said.
He explained that National Cell Day provides an opportunity to evaluate the party's membership database, acknowledge active members, and honour those who have passed away. The exercise also allows Zanu-PF to verify the accuracy of its membership records and assess growth under President Mnangagwa's leadership, which has been reflected in recent by-election successes.
"The Cell Day allows senior leadership to interface directly with community members, from the Presidium down to branch-level officials," Machacha added. "We expect a strong turnout to demonstrate that the cells are functional and to empower local cell leadership to engage regularly with their members."
Cell chairpersons have been instructed to set agendas that address local developmental needs, including improvements to clinics, schools, and feeder roads. Introduced in 2022, National Cell Day is a key component of Zanu-PF's strategy to rejuvenate its mass mobilisation units. Under the party constitution, a cell structure comprises at least 50 members.
