ZIMBABWE international forward Tawanda Chirewa has joined English League One side Barnsley on loan for the remainder of the 2025/26 season, seeking more regular first-team opportunities.
The 22-year-old, who spent the latter part of last season on loan at Huddersfield Town, has featured only twice for Wolverhampton Wanderers' first team in the current Premier League campaign, coming on as a substitute against Aston Villa and West Ham United. He also made six appearances for Wolves' Under-21 side.
"I'm at a stage of my career where I have a point to prove," Chirewa told the Barnsley website. "I need to show what I can do and really impact games. The manager, Conor Hourihane, was on the same wavelength when I spoke to him, and he sold me amazing ideas of how this club wants to go in these next couple of months. Watching them play, the bravery they show is something I want to show — bravery to go and impact games and win football matches in this league."
Chirewa joined Wolves from Ipswich Town in 2023 and has made 12 appearances for the senior side since then. He has also gained experience on loan at Derby County in the Championship and Huddersfield Town in League One. In December 2025, he made his Africa Cup of Nations debut, playing in all three group matches for Zimbabwe against Egypt, Angola, and South Africa.
Barnsley, currently 15th in League One, welcomed the addition of the versatile forward, with head coach Hourihane praising Chirewa's qualities. "We're really pleased to bring Tawanda in. He's a young player with genuine top-level experience, and that's a big asset for us. His Premier League exposure and ability to play across the front line give us another dimension going into the final stretch of the season. He's hungry, he's quick, and he fits the style we want to play," Hourihane said.
Chirewa made his Premier League debut as a second-half substitute in a 0-0 draw away to Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2024. Born in Chelmsford, he began his career at Ipswich Town, becoming the club's second youngest ever debutant at just 16 years and 31 days.
The young forward joins Barnsley as the club's fifth signing of the winter window, following the arrivals of Owen Goodman, Scott Banks, Eoghan O'Connell, and Charlie Lennon. Chirewa spent the second half of last season at Huddersfield Town, making 13 appearances, including eight starts, and had previously been on loan at Derby County in the first half of the 2024-25 season.
With his combination of Premier League experience, versatility, and international exposure, Chirewa is expected to play a key role in Barnsley's push through the remainder of the League One campaign.
