The High Court circuit sitting in Hwange has sentenced Obey Ncube to 20 years in prison for murdering his 77‑year‑old grandfather.
The court heard that on 27 June 2025 at Manasa Village in Lupane, Ncube repeatedly struck the now‑deceased, Gibson Sibanda, with a knobkerrie and the metal handle of an ox‑drawn plough inside a hut. The attack was witnessed by the offender’s mother and wife.
After the assault, Ncube ordered the injured man to pack his belongings and leave the homestead. He later claimed he had taken him to St Paul’s Mission Hospital, but the body was found on 2 July 2025 near a bridge, prompting police investigations.
During the trial, Ncube claimed he suspected the deceased of practising witchcraft against him and said he lost control after finding him preparing herbs.
The court ruled that disputes and suspicions within families must never lead to violence, emphasising that the law protects the sanctity of human life.
