The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a warning to individuals and groups opposing Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 (CAB3), cautioning against incitement of violence or public disorder as parliamentary debate on the controversial legislation continues.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the police said Zimbabweans are expected to maintain peace and uphold the law throughout the legislative process.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police expects peace and the general maintenance of law and order to be observed by Zimbabweans," the statement said.
The warning comes amid growing opposition to CAB3 from civil society organisations, constitutional law experts and opposition political actors, who argue that the proposed amendments could weaken democratic safeguards and consolidate power within the executive.
The police further cautioned against what it described as attempts to mobilise citizens to engage in unlawful activities, including inciting revolt, damaging property, disrupting traffic, or causing public alarm.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police is on high alert to ensure that Zimbabweans continue to enjoy the safety and security obtaining in the country," the statement added.
Authorities also warned that individuals or groups allegedly using social media platforms to issue threats or incite violence would face legal action.
The announcement comes as Parliament continues to debate the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, one of the most contentious legislative proposals in recent years.
Critics of the Bill have called for broader public consultation, while some stakeholders have suggested that any constitutional changes of this magnitude should be subjected to a national referendum before adoption.
As debate intensifies, the ZRP has maintained that it will act firmly against any conduct deemed to threaten public order or national stability during the legislative process.
