ZIMBABWEAN comedian Learnmore Jonasi has been named as part of Trevor Noah's South Africa National Team of Comedy, joining a line-up of leading comics for a national tour scheduled to take place in Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban this September.
The announcement marks another major milestone for Jonasi, whose international profile has grown rapidly following a series of high-profile performances and competition successes.
Welcoming the Zimbabwean comedian to the tour, Trevor Noah praised Jonasi's talent and stage presence.
"Every great team needs players who can change the game in one moment. Learnmore is that," said Noah, Captain of South Africa's National Team of Comedy.
"He's original, he's fearless, and he's got the kind of timing you can't coach. South Africa is going to love him."
Jonasi has built an impressive international résumé, finishing as a top-five finalist and Golden Buzzer recipient on America's Got Talent. He also won the 2023 Boston Comedy Festival and secured the Audience Choice Award at the 2023 Jersey City Comedy Festival.
Reacting to the announcement on Savanna Cider's social media platforms, Jonasi expressed excitement about returning to South Africa while jokingly referencing the popular South African Netflix telenovela The Polygamist.
"The Real Jonasi is coming to South Africa, super excited to be back," he wrote.
The comedian made headlines earlier this year after celebrated producer Lebo M served him with legal papers during one of his live comedy performances over a joke involving The Lion King.
During an appearance on One54 Africa with hosts Godfrey and Akbar Gbajabiamila, Jonasi humorously claimed that the famous opening chant from The Lion King, "Nants' Ingonyama", translates to: "Look, there is a lion, oh my God!"
The joke sparked controversy and attracted widespread attention on social media.
Jonasi's inclusion in the Savanna Serves South Africa Festival of Comedy further cements his growing reputation as one of Africa's fastest-rising stand-up comedians.
The comedy festival will be staged across Durban, Pretoria and Cape Town, bringing together some of the region's biggest comedy acts for audiences across South Africa.
