Authorities at Epworth Polyclinic District are investigating a break-in at the facility's pharmacy after family planning tablets valued at US$540 were stolen.
According to pharmacy manager Marshall Mashaka (27), he was alerted to the theft by dispensary assistant Magdalena Mavhunga, who discovered signs of a break-in on Monday.
Mavhunga reported that the clinic's alarm system had been deactivated and that the perpetrators appeared to have used a duplicate key to gain access through both the main entrance and the security screen door.
The thieves allegedly made off with a box containing 1,080 packs of Control L contraceptive tablets, each comprising 28 blister packs.
The theft has raised concerns over security at the health facility and the potential disruption to the supply of family planning medication for patients.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza could not be reached for comment at the time of publication. However, H-Metro understands that the incident was reported at Epworth Police Station under RRB 6875716.
Police investigations are ongoing.
