A 25-year-old man from Bikita's Chief Marozva area in Masvingo allegedly fatally struck a fellow villager with an iron bar following a misunderstanding over the use of his step mother's wheelbarrow.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident happened on Saturday at about 9am.
He identified the deceased as Anania Ringanai (30) of Chinoera Village. Insp Zhanero said the body was taken to Silveira Mission Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.
He said the suspect, Munyaradzi Gepe of the same village was arrested and is assisting police with investigations.
"Gepe is in police custody assisting with investigations. He would appear in court soon facing a murder charge," said Insp Zhanero.
He said on the fateful day, Ringanai met Gepe at the homestead of Ms Eugene Rungano.
Gepe was carrying stones using a wheelbarrow belonging to Ringanai's stepmother, Ms Tsungayi Chiramba.
"Upon coming closer to him, Ringanai, without due warning, slapped Gepe on the face accusing him of misusing his stepmother's wheelbarrow. Sensing danger, Gepe ran away but Ringanai gave chase until he caught up with him," he said.
Insp Zhanero said after Ringanai caught up with Gepe the pair engaged in a fight resulting in the latter picking up an iron bar and striking his victim.
"He struck him on the head with an iron bar and fled. Ringanai then came back staggering towards the wheelbarrow and collapsed. Ms Rungano and a fellow villager, Ms Susan Mhungu rushed to the scene intending to render first aid but found Ringanai already dead," he said.
