MIDLANDS police have launched an investigation after a dog was seen feasting on the body of a new-born baby at a rubbish dump site in Gweru's Mkoba Village.
Shocked residents tried to chase the canine away, and then watched in disbelief as it ran a short distance with its prey, Chronicle reported.
Mkoba Village 13 resident Ellen Makanya said: "I was in my kitchen doing my dishes when I heard some boys from the neighbourhood shouting outside after they saw a dog eating what appeared to be some fresh meat near my house. When I went to investigate, some of my neighbours were whistling and chasing after a dog which was fleeing while clamping something like a big chunk of meat with its teeth."
Makanya said local boys threw stones at the fleeing dog, forcing it to drop the baby's remains.
She told Chronicle: "Only the upper parts of the body which included the head and hands had been left. The body appeared to be that of a new-born baby and the dog had already consumed the intestines and both legs."
Ernest Moyo, another witness, said: "It's painful to learn that people in this modern era are still so cruel to the extent of throwing away their new-born babies. Police should do their investigations thoroughly to make sure that such criminals are brought to book."
The police spokesperson for Midlands Province Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said officers were called to Mkoba Village 13 yesterday morning after reports of a dog eating a baby's remains.
"We're treating this as a case of baby dumping, but we have an open mind. No arrests have been made so far, but our officers are investigating," he said.
