The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) says it has implemented the biogas energy project to allow the majority of the people in rural areas to access sources of energy which are cheaper than electricity.

REA Public Relations Manager, Mr Johannes Nyamayedenga said the decision has also been taken because biogas is environmentally friendly, readily available and can be used as organic fertiliser.

He said the agency has built five prototype biogas digesters at Harare Hospital, Chikurubi Prison, Pig Industry Board and at a homestead in Goromonzi, among other places, adding that his organisation is now working on building biogas digesters in each of the country`s 10 provinces.

He said the REA, in conjunction with provincial administrators are in the process of identifying schools, clinics and other areas in which the project will be implemented.

To date, the agency, whose mandate is to provide electricity in rural areas, has implemented 643 and 745 projects in Matabeleland North and South Provinces respectively.
