Another MDC-T bigwig falls

FORMER MDC-T secretary for local government, Blessing Chebundo, was left in the cold after he failed to land any position in the party structures, joining a long list of heavyweights rejected by the people.

The former Kwekwe Central legislator boycotted elections by the Midlands North provincial council to elect three representatives to the national executive, citing an uneven playing ground.

Provincial secretary Fellix Zifunze confirmed that Chebundo was now only a card carrying member in the party after elections held in Gokwe saw Willard Somerai, Editor Matamisa and Albert Machando being elected to the national executive.

"He boycotted the elections for reasons best known to him, but the revolutionary train does not stop for a barking dog," Zifunze said.

"We went ahead with the elections and the results still stand."

Zifunze's comments come at a time a clique in the party aligned to Chebundo, who lost in the parliamentary elections to Grade 2 dropout Masango Matambanadzo, is reportedly circulating a petition to try and force new elections.

"We have heard that there is a petition, but it has not yet reached me," he said.

"Our elections were legitimate and held according to party guidelines. They will not be reversed."

Chebundo, for long touted the Midlands North political godfather, threw his hat in the ring in the party's 2009 congress for the vice-chairperson position, but lost to Morgan Komichi.

In December, tempers flared during another provincial meeting after it had emerged that provincial chairman Sedwell Bhebhe had clandestinely forwarded Chebundo's name and that of former Health minister Henry Madzorera as elected representatives of the province.

Zifunze said the anomaly would be corrected.
