TEN groups will today compete for a spot to represent Matabeleland South in the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional dance national finals.
The provincial finals taking place at Blanket Mine Beerhall in Gwanda will feature groups; Blanket Mine Arinote, Blanket Chihoda, Zonda Mthakathi, Inqama Yophondo, Izinsizwa Zomhlaka, How Mine Chihoda, Isitshikisha Sokusile, Makwa dance, How Mine Ben Arinote and How Mine Chigure.
Chibuku Neshamwari programmes officer for Matabeleland South, Percy Vela, said all was set for the big day. "We expect the competition to be even stiffer this year because most of the groups know what's expected of them.
"We hope they'll deliver. This time around, the competitions are fair even in terms of gender balance as most groups have a proportionate number of male and female dancers," said Vela.
While most of the groups are not new to the competition, only one group — Blanket Mine Arinote — will be taking part in the competition for the first time. "We urge people from Gwanda and surrounding communities to come out in their numbers to supports the competing groups."
He said he was optimistic that the best group would be selected to represent their province. "Everyone will be looking out for the best dance group and we hope that the cream will be chosen because they'll carry our flag to the nationals where we expect them to do us proud and win," Vela said.
Last year's Matabeleland South Chibuku Neshamwari winners, Jahunda Community Arts, will attend the provincial finals today and provide entertainment. This year's national finals will once again be held in Bulawayo at the White City Stadium on July 30.
