Zimbabwe's Hwange Thermal Power Plant is generating electricity from all six of its units for the "first time in years," the state-controlled Herald said, citing spokesman Willard Gwasira. Hwange, in western Zimbabwe, is producing about 607 megawatts of power, up from 300 megawatts earlier in the week, the Harare-based Herald said on its website.
Zesa Holdings, Zimbabwe's monopoly power company, is producing a total of 1,002 megawatts of electricity, it said. The increased power production couldn't be guaranteed because of ageing parts that must be replaced, the newspaper cited Gwasira as saying. Zimbabwe imports between 50 and 150 megawatts from neighboring Mozambique, said the Herald.
Calls to Zesa and its Zimbabwe Power Co. Unit seeking comment weren't answered today. Zimbabwe needs 2,700 megawatts at peak demand, Zesa said last year.
