Pirate taxi driver bashes municipal police officer

PLUMTREE – A municipal police officer was assaulted and had his uniform torn by a pirate taxi driver who resisted arrest in Plumtree Town, causing drama in the central business district.

The driver, Tinashe Zhira (33), allegedly attacked officer Nobert Tembo after being caught dropping passengers at an undesignated point on 28 November.

According to the State, Tembo attempted to arrest Zhira, who then became violent, striking the officer with open hands before tearing his uniform.

Zhira was eventually subdued, arrested and taken to Plumtree Magistrates’ Court, where he appeared before Magistrate Joshua Nembaware.

Sheila Nyathi prosecuted, and the matter was remanded to 1 December.
