A MANGWE man beat up his younger brother to death following a dispute over beer.
Phumulani Ncube, 34, of Mkubizi Village in Sanzukwi area, accused his 33-year-old brother Qhubekani Ncube of being disrespectful and assaulted him with a stick and kicked him all over the body until he became unconscious. Qhubekani sustained severe injuries from the assault on Thursday last week and died on his way to hospital.
An altercation between the two siblings is reported to have started during a drinking spree when Qhubekani accused his brother of being stingy. He blurted out in front of people that his brother did not want to buy beer and was dependant on his friends. He also said his brother dodged buying beer when it was his turn.
The councillor of the area, Francis Sibanda, said Qhubekani proceeded home leaving his brother behind. Phumulani picked up a fight with him upon reaching their homestead.
"Qhubekani found his brother drinking beer with his friends at a local bottle store and joined them. He started mocking his elder brother in front of his friends telling them that he never bought beer," said Sibanda.
He said an argument ensued between the two siblings with Phumulani warning his younger brother against disrespecting him in public.
Sibanda said Phumulani's friends intervened and persuaded Qhubekani to proceed home. He said upon reaching home, a drunken Phumulani confronted his younger brother and demanded an apology. The siblings started fighting. He said Qhubekani's screams for help alerted relatives who rushed out of the house and tried to save him but he had been seriously injured and was lying on the ground unconscious.
Phumulani appeared before Plumtree magistrate Livard Philemon on initial remand facing murder charges. He was remanded in custody to October 18.
Prosecuting, Stanley Chinyanganya said Phumulani beat up his late brother with a stick and kicked him several times on the stomach on Thursday last week till he fell unconscious. They rushed him to a nearby clinic but he died on the way. The matter was reported to the police and Phumulani was arrested on the same day.
Chief Sangulube, whose jurisdiction covers Sanzukwi area, said Qhubekani was buried at his home in the area on Saturday.
