A 37-year-old Inyathi man allegedly raped a 91-year-old woman after he found her alone at her homestead. Thandolwenkosi Moyo pleaded not guilty and told the court that he did not know where the woman lived.
"Your worship l don't even know the victim or where she resides but she is alleging that l raped her. I was surprised when police officers came to my house to arrest me," said Moyo.
The granny told the court that even though it was dark in the room, she managed to identify Moyo through his voice as she had heard him speak previously on numerous occasions.
"I heard him speak that night your worship, he even asked for matches to light his cigarette after raping me," she said.
Magistrate Trynos Utawashe remanded him in custody to today for judgment.
Prosecuting, Robin Mukura told the court that on November 3, 2014 at around 9PM the victim was alone at her homestead preparing to go to sleep in her bedroom when she heard noise outside the hut. When she put the light on to verify the noise she was suddenly grabbed by the throat and ordered to keep quiet and she complied.
"Moyo forced the victim to lie on the bed before undressing her, unzipped his trousers and had sexual intercourse once without her consent. After Moyo had finished he threatened to kill his victim if she revealed the matter to anyone," said Mukura.
He told the court that when the woman noticed that Moyo had gone she proceeded to her neighbour's homestead where she narrated the ordeal to David Xaba.
"On November 4 Xaba accompanied the woman to Siganda police station and reported the matter leading to Moyo's arrest," said Mukura.
