Mugabe himself setting a nepotistic precedence

16 Oct 2016 at 07:52hrs | Views
RG Mugabe has been able to publicly condemn nepotism when at the same time managed to give powerful and rewarding positions to members of his family. When nepotism is executed by the highest office then it will definitely reverberate at the lower offices with little or no consequences. In the same manner Mugabe talks against corruption and never lift a finger to curb it and when he behaves in a fraudulent manner in steals elections he sets an unhealthy precedence to ministers, all government workers as well as those in parastatals. Mugabe has shown that he is not at all interested in fair play by not permitting transparent and free elections to enable the Zimbabweans to choose a desired leader. He continues to forcibly impose himself on the Zimbabweans, for his personal glory and benefit, and such benefits include the unfettered latitude he has in appointing people he desires to certain keys positions of government. This unrestricted leeway gives RG Mugabe immense power for many to literally worship and bootlick him in bid to curry favour.

Recently through the Minister of transport, Jorum Gumbo, RG Mugabe has appointed his son in law Simba Chikore to the post of deputy chief of operations officer of the struggling Air Zimbabwe. This position is an inch away from the post of airline boss. This is a lucrative position and will definitely guarantee steady income for the family of his daughter, Bona. Of cause Simba benefits immensely during the time of high unemployment in country, a condition created by RG Mugabe himself through his recklessly stranglehold on power policies and politics. With people out of jobs in the country, social media is awash with ridicule on how insensitive and self-centred this action is. RG Mugabe has always behaved selfishly, of greatest awe is that he has neglected the health delivery system which has deteriorate to lowest level in the country whilst he dashes now and then to get world class treatments and checkups in Malaysia. He behaves shamelessly in giving Simba a top job when the rest are unemployed just like he thinks only about his own health and throw the welfare of all others under the bus.

Through RG Mugabe's influence, Grace Mugabe has managed to elbow out Muchinguri of top women league job. Grace landing the job was more of an appointment than it was an elective process. This came fast after she had graduated with a PHD from University of Zimbabwe after having studied towards it for just less than three months. RG Mugabe is the Chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe. There is obviously no merit in both Grace's achievements except that she is wife to Zimbabwe's most powerful and most arrogant man who does whatever he wants without even feeling a granule of guilty or responsibility. RG Mugabe can afford to behave proudly because the both Constitution of Zimbabwe and that of his party, Zanu Pf, accord him vast powers.

Leo Mugabe, RG Mugabe's nephew was at the helm of ZIFA, Zimbabwe's soccer governing body for more than two decades buoyed by his uncle to such a position. Secret Service agent's presence at the body's elections always cowered other candidates and manipulated the process in his favour to continue in control of the soccer body. Prolonged Leo Mugabe's tenure at ZIFA is attributed to the current lower soccer standards in the country, having been corruptly mismanaged for long just like RG Mugabe mismanages Zimbabwe government and economy. For now another RG Mugabe's distant nephew, Phillip Chiyangwa runs the soccer body with very poor player playing conditions and paltry remuneration.

Patrick Zhuwao was appointed body chairperson to the forestry commission close to a decade. His tenure FC saw rapid deterioration of our timber reserves in the Eastern Highlands. His tenure coincides, not accidentally, with the period of rapid and unchecked lumbering in the history of Forestry Commission in Zimbabwe. Very little replanting of teak trees was being done so that we are faced with importing timber in the near future as the trees take on average 25 years to mature. There were many Chinese firms lumbering at the time and even now, with sophisticated machinery to cut down trees and process the timber. The situation is so worse that in May 2016 a Parliamentary committee was appointed to check on the rapid dilapidation of timber in the Eastern Highlands. Zhuwao has vowed that his uncle will rule until 2023 though many see this as nothing more than a pathetic wish for someone who stands to benefit with RG Mugabe's continued incumbency, only for the good of Zhuwao and not the nation. Zhuwao even has a permanent space in the Sunday Mail to air his political views, to come back at enemies and to sing praises for his uncle RG Mugabe. Sometime the articles are erratic, incoherent and lack flow but nonetheless, they are published, lest heads may roll. ED Munangangwa also arm twisted the Zibagwe Constituency electorate, terrifying them with unspecified actions to vote for his wife Auxillia, to fill a parliamentary seat he himself had vacated.

Such is the pattern resulting from the influence and power that keeps RG Mugabe going even when he can now hardly walk. It is unimaginable for him to relinquish so much authority behind. But Zimbabweans are recently in a protest mode and it may be not long before the protests to oust the dictator become nationwide. Zimbabweans have at last learnt from RG Mugabe's excesses that there cannot be rights without social responsibility. They have realised, though a little late, that most of their freedom lies in reigning RG Mugabe or limiting the executive powers in general. However the constitution of Zimbabwe gives immense power to the executive so that reigning the executive will be achieved through trimming executive appointing powers and make the incumbent accountable to his boss, the people of Zimbabwe.
