Zim Timber Industry will dead soon
06 May 2014 at 10:47hrs | Views
The Timber Industry in Zimbabwe will be dead soon if nothing has been done to urgently rescue it from the jaws of saboteurs and reckless administrators whose actions will soon render most workers in the industry jobless.
It is very disappointing to note that two big timber producing companies in Nyanga are contributing to the collapse of the industry and help to discredit the government's fiscal system by cruelly and disorderly pumping timber into the informal sector where the timber is sold at a song without.
The tax authorities in Zimbabwe are being predudiced of huge sums of money through an organized tax evasion racket by people hiding behind government programmes such as the Indegenisation, empowerment or Zimasset program.
The informal sector has taken over the timber industry and its just sad to note that formal companies are behind the distruction of the timber industry.
The failure by the informal sector to remit tax to the country's fiscal system shall remain an issue of great concern to citizens of this country. They are actually getting away with fraud.
Now some Asian friends from China have invaded the same timber market and are sweeping the eastern highlands and nothing is flowing into the fiscal system.
Formal companies that are well established in the timber industry are sadly behind the distruction of the industry at the same time taking lead in prejudicing the state tax collector.
A sorry state is beckoning for timber industry workers who are likely to lose their jobs while a few criminals are making money through some shody deals.
Timber companies that have been operating within the confines of the law have now been forced into liquidation and are winding down their operations to pay off workers who have been rendered jobless by the unfair distribution and selling of timber in the informal market.
The formal timber companies with overheads have been have been competing with people operating under trees who are hiding behind politics to evade taxation.
The serious irregularities and unfair trading practices in the timber sector now require the attention of President Robert Mugabe's office for sanity to prevail.
Corruption and poor administration of the harvesting and distribution of timber by the two big timber companies in Nyanga has contributed to serious market distortions collapse of the industry.
