Beneficiaries of the Presidential scholarship at the University of Limpopo have been barred from writing end of year exams due to an uncleared debt of R5 million owing from 2013 to date.

We are reliably informed that the University management is taking measures to sent the students back home by the end of this week. Students are living in dire circumstances since the beginning of the year, female students are selling muffins in the residences to earn a living and some cannot be exempted from indulging into prostitution. Most of the students  come from the poor of the poorest backgrounds and in most cases orphans who do not have any breadwinners to support them financially which forces them to engage in unthinkable and unethical tasks in an effort to cope up with the demanding and hostile campus life.

Students who graduated from the University last year could not access their academic records as well as their degree certificates which is crippling their endeavours to search for jobs.

The patron of the programme President Mugabe paid a standard amount to all the Universities last year but the one for the University of Limpopo was misappropriated by the director of the Programme- Christopher  Mushowe according to the sources.

The officials of the programme are not making any efforts to safeguard the welfare of these students but rather they are busy soliciting for bribes of $700 from students who are aspiring to be beneficiaries of the programme for 2015.

Students have become a laughing stock from what was  once a prestigious programme.

Efforts to contact the concerned students were fruitless for they refused to disclose any information for fear of being victimized by the Scholarship authorities.
