HIGHLANDERS legend Dumisani Nyoni has reassured the nation that his Belgium-based son Vusa Nyoni and Honour Gombami are safe following deadly terror attacks that left about 34 people dead and more than 100 injured on Tuesday morning.
His assurance comes after Sport and Recreation Minister Makhosini Hlongwane had expressed concerns about the safety of the two former Highlanders' players, who ply their trades in Belgium.
"I spoke to him (Vusa) on Tuesday and he assured me that he and Honour were safe. He said there was a heavy police and military presence on the streets and I think that probably scares them a little bit as you know that soldiers in Zimbabwe stay in the barracks. It's something new to them," said Dumisani.
Vusa plays for Mons FC in a city by the same name about 53KM from Brussels where terrorists detonated explosives at the airport and a busy subway station, while Gombami is at Antwep, 44KM from Brussels.
Hlongwane had said he would engage his Foreign Affairs colleague Simbarashe Mumbengegwi to check on the safety of the two players and also ask Zifa to contact the players to ascertain their safety.
"The government is interested in the safety of all its citizens wherever they are deployed for work. I will engage my Foreign Affairs colleague to check on the safety of the players. I will talk to Zifa to get in touch with the players to ascertain their safety," said Hlongwane.
Another Belgium-based Zimbabwean striker Knowledge Musona is safe after flying to Harare from Germany where his team had gone for a training camp.
Musona is in the Warriors' side preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Swaziland in Mbabane on Good Friday.
The attacks came days after the capture of Salah Abdeslam, the main suspect in the deadly Paris attacks in November 2015.
The Belgian government has asked people to stay indoors, while the Brussels Airport has been temporarily closed and the cross border Eurostar has been grounded.
