ZRP Masvingo Central District came in tops at the provincial commander's sports gala held at Zimuto camp last week in preparation for the 2016 Commissioner General's gala to be held in Harare in August.
Masvingo Central which consists of Masvingo Central District Headquarters, Masvingo Rural, Rujeko, Chikato, Muchakata and Renco scooped the highest number of medals with 105 gold, 33 silver and 5 bronze medals.
On second position was Masvingo East who amassed 20 gold, 18 silver and 5 bronze, PHQ came third with 25 gold, 12 silver, 3 bronze while Masvingo West on 4th position had 15 gold, 15 silver and 8 bronze.
The districts battled it out in various sporting categories such as athletics, darts, soccer, volleyball, chess and pool and Sergeant Owen Tatsaukana was voted the most outstanding athlete of the tournament after a five star performance for PHQ during the games, for his efforts he received a cash prize. Speaking during the awards ceremony, guest of honour, Officer Commanding Masvingo Province Senior Assistant Commissioner Martha Mofolo said sports help in creating self-confidence, reduces stress and improve their performance when they get back to their respective stations.
"One of the major thrust of this event is to select a very strong competitive team to represent the province at the Commissioner General's Gala which I am sure you are going to do well considering your previous performance," said Snr Ass Com Mofolo.
Mofolo also encouraged the selected athletes to be disciplined and to desist from sleeping around as that would reduce the number of competitive athletes after contracting HIV and AIDS.
She also challenged those selected to surpass the performance by 2015 sportsperson of the year Superintended Charles John who has already set the bar high.
After the event, winners walked away with medals and various prizes that included cash and trophies.
Mofolo also thanked the participants and sponsors like Credit Plus and First Micro Finance (FMC) for making the event a success.
