Harare-With the Harare darts league over teams in the provincial league took part in the annual Jewel Cup darts cup. The tournament began on the 28th day of October 2014 with all teams participating in groups of three teams each. Top two teams from each group qualified for the quarter finals which were played on the 11th day of November 2014.
The first round of group games saw darts powerhouse Mabelreign Country Club and Aspindale biting the dust. The only female darts team ZRP Strikers ladies could not hold the fort in their group in which they played Whitehouse and ZRP Strikers men and lost both games. As if to show solidarity or prowess the game between the two ZRP teams was played with the men's team handicapped with one player but managed to come out winners [26-13].
The grand finale of the darts event is on the 15th day of November 2014 at ZRP Highfields canteen where the semi finals and finals will be played on the same day. As it stands at the moment three teams have secured their places in the semi finals. Jewel Arrows overcome ZRP Strikers men team [27-12] with the latter playing with five players. The game between Whitehouse [Chitungwiza boys] and Blue Jobs [airmen] was a stroll in the pack for the Chitungwiza boys who came out 20-9 with the airmen abandoning the game before finishing all the games. The only game still to be played pits Police A and Flying Eagles which will be played on Thursday 13th November 2014.Jewel Arrows will square-off with the Chitungwiza boys while Kutsaga awaits the Police A and Flying eagles game winner.
Jewel Cup trophy is sponsored by Mr. Meynard Moyo the current President of National Darts Association of Zimbabwe. He is also a darts player with Jewel Arrows darts club. The trophy is sponsored to the tune of $400-00 accompanied by a trophy and medals for the winners. Mr. Moyo has been sponsoring the trophy since time immemorial from his pocket, a feat hard to come by in the sports fraternity these days. The absence of sponsorship has seen a dearth of many sporting disciplines in the country with Volleyball, handball, swimming failing to attract a huge following in the various provinces in the country but concentrated in Harare only. Darts has grown to be played in all the country's provinces and having teams participating on national level annually. This has also grown to include under 19s and under 25s. This is a subject for another day
Newcomers Kutsaga darts club are the favorites to wrestle the cup from clubs like Jewel Arrows and Flying Eagles on a good day. Kutsaga who are the 2014 season Harare Darts league champions boosts of a host of good players in the form of Leo chitarafu Mabharani, Cornelius Chiradza, Anthony Murombo and Patrick House among others.
A week after completion of the Jewel Cup event players will be gearing themselves for the last tournament in the Harare darts league-Mr. and Mrs. Harare cups scheduled for the 22nd of November 2014 at the same venue. The tournament is open to players who ply their trade in Harare darts league.
