Gaborone United (GU) have suspended Zimbabwean striker, Sageby Sandaka pending a criminal case the player is said to be under investigation for. GU secretary, Hebert Letsebe confirmed yesterday that

they wrote a suspension letter to the player on Tuesday immediately after receiving a report that the player has been arrested by the police and was being investigated for a criminal offence.

Though he could not divulge any details, Letsebe said they found it necessary to suspend the player from any team activities as he is helping the police with investigations. He said they last saw the player last December in Maun where GU was playing Township Rollers in a league match and players were released for a break thereafter.

He said players only reported back to training on Tuesday and Sandaka was absent. The player was arrested this week and was at one of the police stations in Gaborone. Letsebe however, said they did not know where he was detained yesterday.

"It is true that Sandaka has been arrested by the police. However, we do not know where he is right now," Letsebe said. He said they suspended the player in order to protect the image of the club, as they do not want their reputation to be tarnished by one player. Letsebe said they do not know the details of the crime Sandaka might have committed as they do not get involved a lot in players' private lives.

He said as a club, they can only advise their players to behave well outside the field of play, but cannot dictate to them what to do. Meanwhile, a source told Mmegi Sport that the player might have been handed to security and intelligence officers, as he was involved in some high profile crimes that include forgery.

The club has an on and off relationship with the player owing to ill discipline. He is now in his second stint with the club he joined in 2006. In 2009, the club suspended him together with former captain and countryman Itai Gwandu after they were accused of leading a rebellion after players demanded better bonuses after the club won the championship. He was subsequently offloaded during the January 2011 window and was snatched up by Mochudi Centre Chiefs.

He did not stay long at Chiefs despite having played an important role at the club and was without a club at the end of the season. Issues of ill discipline have always followed the player at any team he played for. He joined BMC at the beginning of the past season, but GU shocked many when they signed the player back on a two-year contract after a six month with the Lobatse club.
