Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor is set to join Real Madrid on loan after the Spanish club announced that an agreement had been reached with the option of a permanent deal in the summer.
Sky Sports News understands that a medical will take place in Madrid on Wednesday before the loan is sealed and then if the Primera Liga giants decide to take up an option to buy at the end of the season the fee will be £18million.
Real boss Jose Mourinho has been desperate to sign a striker in the wake of the injury suffered by Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema's fall from grace.
A statement on the club's official website read: "Real Madrid CF and Manchester City FC have reached a deal that will see Emmanuel Adebayor play on loan for the former club.
"The player will remain at Real Madrid until the end of the current season, at which point the club hold a unilateral option to purchase the player."
Offloaded
Hamburg blocked a Bernabeu return for Ruud van Nistelrooy earlier in January and so Real turned their attention to City's out-of-favour Adebayor, who turns 27 at the end of February.
The former Arsenal player has featured in just 13 matches this season and City manager Roberto Mancini's decision to sign Edin Dzekofurther decreased the likelihood of first-team opportunities.
City have already offloaded Roque Santa Cruz to Blackburn and Adebayor is also now on the brink of leaving Eastlands after it became clear he was not a part of Mancini's plans.
A potential £18m move in the summer would represent a £7m loss for City on the fee they paid Arsenal in July 2009.
