Bulawayo City council will this year host a delegation from South Africa to explore opportunities for business engagement with the neighbouring nation.
This was revealed through the latest council minutes that Acting Town Clerk reported that the Counsellor Economic for the South African Embassy, Frank Stevens had advised that a South African business delegation comprising mainly members of the Black Business Council, would visit Bulawayo on 25th - 27th November, 2015 to explore opportunities for business engagement with their city counterparts.
" In a preparatory meeting held on 12th Oct 2015, Mr Stevens had indicated that the delegation would meet one on one with members of ZNCC, CZI, ABUZ, CIFOZ and other business organisations in the city," reads council minutes.
"It was envisaged that the delegation would then tour National Blankets, the Cold Storage Commission, Apollo Tyres and the National Railways of Zimbabwe. A detailed programme was still being finalised."
The minutes states that the Embassy had extended a request for Council to host the business delegation together with invited local business representatives in the evening on 26th November, 2015.
"Invited guests should number in the region of 200, at an estimated cost of some plus minus $5 000," reads the minutes.
"The Financial Director had confirmed that in view of the nature of the visit, his department would cover the costs thereof. In the ensuing discussion this initiative was seen as an opportunity to market the city as a destination for business and to promote investment in Bulawayo. The request to host the Cocktail was therefore supported on the understanding that Council would compile the guest list and assistance would also be sourced from the Business Community."
The council resolved that authority be granted for the hosting of a cocktail for the visiting South African Business delegation on 26th November 2015 as detailed in the report above on the understanding that the Business Committee will be approached for donations.
