A South African national has been sentenced to pay a fine of US$400 for causing the death of a cyclist in Bulawayo.

Mmantlebeka Ernest Modiba, from Polokwane, South Africa, appeared before Western Commonage Magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube on a charge of culpable homicide. He pleaded guilty to the offence and was ordered to pay the fine before March 3, 2026. In default of payment, he will serve 12 months in prison. Additionally, Modi ba has been banned from driving in Zimbabwe for 24 months.

Prosecutor Cathrine Kuzu told the court that on February 5 at around 4:15 PM, the accused was driving a Man Afrifit truck (registration number LJX873MP) towing two trailers (registration numbers MF35CLGP and MF35HVGP) along Mpopoma Drive heading south.

While turning onto Khami Road near Woodlot Timbers PVT LTD in Kelvin, the truck struck cyclist Hebert Nyasha Matukutuku, who was traveling east along Khami Road. The impact caused fatal injuries, and Matukutuku died on the spot.

The court also noted that the accused's vehicle had been inspected at the VED Bulawayo Depot as part of the investigation.

The case has drawn attention to road safety concerns in the city, particularly regarding interactions between motorists and cyclists.
