SINGER Audius Mtawarira comes out of his cocoon with a performance at Fashion Weekend Zimbabwe (FWZ) at the Glasshouse, Borrowdale Racecourse today.

The singer, formerly based in Australia, has managed to keep a low profile since resettling in Zimbabwe last year concentrating more on cattle ranching at his late father's farm.

Speaking to NewsDay yesterday Mtawarira said he is still active in the music business.

"I have been recording my new album House of Stone that is now due for release," he said.

According to the artiste he has also gone solo after ditching Metro Studios who used to be his stable.

"I just followed the indigenisation trend to see how it goes for me as an independent artiste," he said.

The event will also see Afro-soul jazz artiste Shingi Mangoma performing for guests on the day.

According to the organiser of the event, Shamiso Ruzvidzo: "It is an annual event that merges fashion, music and food into one programme; primarily promoting fashion," she said.

"Zimbabwean designers, retailers, beauticians, makeup houses, Spa's, musicians and fine food providers will all come together under one roof taking the consumer on a fashion, food and musical journey."

The event, which will also save as the introduction and launch of the 2014 episode, will run over a weekend with fashion markets, beauty hubs, daytime fashion shows, food markets, live music and an opening gala all being part of the fashion weekend programme.

She said emerging Zimbabwean designers showcasing on the night were selected from a nationwide search held earlier in the year that went through a six wee skills mentorship programme where they were trained from all fashion designing aspects.

"Designers received an allowance of $300 from the Culture Fund and the European Union to prepare a four-piece-ready-to-wear collection, which will be showcased on the night," said Ruzvidzo.

She said the gala showcase would be judged by industry judges, seeing one designer awarded the FWZ Design Talent Award for 2013.

The emerging designers are Edmond Chikumbirke, Natasha Theresa Kagoro, Nyasha Nhutsve, Samantha Dika, Samantha Matemadombo and Tanya Mushayi.

Botswana's Fatima Mekgwe of MTK Mateke will be the foreign designer showcasing, among a host of Zimbabwean heavyweights.
