South African gospel diva Rebecca Malope, who last performed in Zimbabwe seven years ago, will return to the country at the end of the month for a once-off concert.

Malope will perform in the Harare Gardens on May 28 at the Gospel Divas Concert being organised by Barbra Chikosi of Red Rose Promotions.

Chikosi, better known in entertainment circles as Mama Red Rose, told the Daily News that the initial plan was for Malope's visit to coincide with Mother's Day but that failed to materialise because of  the South African music star's commitments in the United Kingdom (UK).

"I wanted to have the show on May 7 for Mother's Day but she had already been booked for a UK show. This show is also special in that Malope will be celebrating her 30 years in the music industry.

"She was last here in October 2009 for the Gospel Divas Concert. This is my fifth time hosting the concert and it is in celebration of female gospel artistes," said Chikosi.

The multi-award-winning 47-year-old, who has released 36 chart-topping albums in a three-decade-long music career, will head to Birmingham in the UK on Saturday after which she will make a maiden tour of Ireland.

Malope's most popular songs in Zimbabwe include Look at me, Mandilive, Uthando Lwami, Ngiyamazi Lo Jesu, Ngibemuhle Nam, and Ukuzenza.

The gospel music megastar, who hosts a gospel music talk show called It's Gospel Time on SABC 2, recently told South Africa's Sunday Times that she was currently working on her autobiography.

"I am taking my time with the book. I have opted to write it myself‚ because it is my story and therefore‚ I know it better than anyone.

"The other reason that it has taken so long is because I keep on having to go back and add more details that I suddenly remember every now and then. You know‚ old age is catching up with me‚" she added‚ jokingly.

At the Gospel Divas Concert, Malope will share the stage with various local musicians who include Olivia Charamba, Bethen Pasinawako-Ngolomi, Sharon Manyonganise, Joyce Simeti, Amanda Sagonda, Hannah Chikosi, Olinda Marowa, and Talent Madiro.

Chikosi, who jointly promoted Jamaican reggae star Chris Martin's gig at the Glamis Arena in Harare last weekend, has called on Zimbabwean music fans to rally behind female musicians.

"I want to encourage people to come through and support the female musicians. This is a family show which will start in the morning so it is actually a family day. People can bring their children and enjoy the day," she said.
